Tech Tuesday! WIFI vs. Cabled for your computer or notebook? If you have the option to connect to the internet by cable instead of WIFI, DO IT! Using our network as an example, the speed varied greatly:
- 370mpbs (megabits per second) for a WIFI connection.
- 980mpbs with a CAT 5 cable plugged in, instead of WIFI. CAT 5 cables have been the industry standard network cables for about the last 25 years.
- CAT 6 cables are now affordable, and the speed went up to 1,280mpbs (3+ times faster than wifi).
So what is a megabit? That is the measurement for the speed and represents the amount of data. For example, a 1.5GB (gigabyte) 1080 resolution movie high-resolution movie will use 7.6 million Mbps to play if you download the movie (about 2.3GB using wifi it would take about 55 seconds on wifi but only 15 seconds using a CAT 6 wired connection. Now while that saves you a little time, if you are watching the same movie in 4K, using WIFI, you will be waiting just over 8 mins vs. using a CAT 6 wired connection you are watching the movie with a download time of just over 2 mins!
So how much is a CAT 6 cable? Amazon.ca has a 10-foot cable for less than CAD$10!
