Elon Musk's Canadian Citizenship?

On Thin Ice

Yes, Elon Musk has Canadian Citizenship, African, and United States. The timeline of citizenship is the following:

  • Elon Musk was born in South Africa – granting his African citizenship.
  • In 1989, Elon Musk applied for and was granted Canadian citizenship, as his mother was born in Saskatchewan. According to Wikipedia, Musk applied for Canadian citizenship to avoid mandatory African military service.
  • Elon was granted United States citizenship in 2002.

On February 22, 2025, Charlie Angus, a Canadian Member of Parliament, will support a petition to have Elon Musk's Canadian citizenship revoked.

The petition only requires 500 signatures to be certified and brought forward to the Canadian House of Commons. As of 5:00 pm EST, over 34,000 signatures have been captured (in under six hours).

What are the grounds for the request to have Elon Musk's Canadian citizenship revoked? Every Canadian pledges that they will “pledge their allegiance to the Sovereign of Canada, who represents the country as a whole.” In Elon Musk's case, he would have had to make this pledge at the ceremony when he became a Canadian citizen.

So, can Elon Musk lose his Canadian citizenship? Well, we are not immigrant lawyers, but between both the pledge to “their allegiance to the Sovereign of Canada, who represents the country as a whole” and past cases where there was serious misconduct or disloyalty to Canadian Sovereignty and Procedural Non-Compliance.

While no one can estimate the number of Canadians who will sign the petition, a recent survey shows that 90% of surveyed Canadians are against Canada becoming part of the United States.
